Teaching Philosophy
We believe that piano study can be an integral part
of any child's well-rounded education. Much research exists that
suggests the study of piano provides great benefits for the
developing cognitive skills of young school age children.
Additionally, the study of a musical instrument can give a child a
great sense of achievement leading to enhanced self-esteem.
Of course, not every child who takes piano lessons
will become a "concert pianist;" however, the skills and more
importantly, the appreciation and understanding of music that a
student gains as a result of lessons will last for a lifetime. Some
students do of course show a unique aptitude for the instrument and
can be encouraged towards a career as a pianist and/or teacher.
Others will perhaps transition to another instrument after a few
years of study. In a case like this, all the musical skills gained
in the study of the piano will translate to another instrument quite
easily. The path for most students will be that they continue with
lessons through their high school years, thus continuing to grow as
musicians and becoming competent pianists able to collaborate with
other musicians in church or social settings. Most importantly, they
will have the skills necessary to play music in any style or genre
they want to explore as teenagers and adults. At this level, most
students will be advanced enough to play some of the greatest pieces
of classical literature ever written for the piano.
